An Introduction to Discbound Planning

An Introduction to Discbound Planning

If you're new to physical planners, or currently use the traditional ringbound system, this post is to get you up to speed about what the discbound system is all about and why we think it's a much better alternative.

In this post, we’ll take a deep dive into the key features of discbound planners and compare them to the familiar ring-bound system, so you can decide if it's the right fit for you.

What Is Discbound Planning?

Discbound planning is a loose-leaf planning system similar in concept to ring bound planners (where you can add, remove, and re-arrange pages as you like).

Insert attachment mechanism

The main difference between ring bound and discbound planners are their page attachment mechanism. Unlike traditional ring binders, discbound planning uses solid metal or plastic discs rather than rings.

Your inserts and other planner accessories simply 'clip' onto the rings via a gentle push, rather than having to open the system every time you want to add, remove or move pages like you do with ringbound planners.

This also means the discs have more longevity than ringbound planners, as you're not having to manipulate them every time you make a change. If you use metal discs, your discbound planner will likely never need to be replaced.

What this difference means

Using discs rather than rings means so many things! I'll summarise here but I suggest reading through our post: Why discbound? For a more detailed breakdown of all the benefits of discbound planners over traditional ring bound planners.

1. More flexibility

With discs, if your planner gets to capacity, you can simply purchase larger discs, and easily swap them over to increase the capacity of your planner. If you're using a ring binder, you'd have to purchase a whole new binder.

2. Lay flat design

With discs, you can flip your cover page all the way around to the back of your planner, meaning wherever you are working on in your planner, either on the left or right page, you can set it up so you have the page completely flat - no pages curling, and no awkward or messy writing as you have to try to accommodate for bulky rings under your wrist.

3. Faster planner amendments

With discs, to add, move, or remove pages, you simply gently pull them out or press them in. No opening and closing of rings. This makes it super fast to move things around as you customise your planner.

4. More resilience

Over time, rings can bend and become damaged, which can also impact how smoothly your pages slide over the rings as you turn the pages. With discs, especially metal discs, the discs remain sturdy, in shape and solid and will last a lot more wear and tear than discs.

5. Discbound planners are beautiful, and so customisable!

With the discbound system, you can really make your planner your own. Pick your cover, pick your inserts, pick your discs, add a wrap around cover if you want, and then once you're happy, you can totally customise it again in 3 months time! Go from warm winter vibes to a travel-inspired planner for your trip to a citris themed planner for summer within a minute or two and without replacing your whole binder.
